Heck, why not?

*I updated this to include another video on the DAPL and corrected all instances where I used “protesters” to “protectors.”

This is not a post about how I’m feeling because of losing my best friends, my depression, anxiety, or anything even related to those topics.  Because I don’t use Facebook anymore, this is where I can post things that I think are important for people to see and even though I don’t have very many readers, posting stuff here is what I can do if I can’t do anything else.  Maybe it will reach someone who can do more.

First, the Dakota Access Pipeline protests that are going in North Dakota.  Here are the basics about what that is and here are the basics about the protests.  This is getting very little attention in the so-called mainstream media and it’s been all but ignored by anyone with political power to stop the construction of the Pipeline.  Most of the coverage I’ve personally seen on this has been on The Young Turks NetworkThis video is fairly long, but the TYT reporter is justifiably outraged by how this is being covered.  Usually I watch their stuff on YouTube rather than through their main website and they’ve done several pieces on this, most recently, one in which they call out CNN for covering Kanye West’s rants and other completely stupid stuff and NOT covering NoDAPL.  There’s also one that talks about how one 21-year-old woman had her arm essentially blown off after she was hit with a concussion grenade thrown at her by the police.  Concussion grenades aren’t actually supposed to be thrown at people.  The police there deny that this woman was hit with a concussion grenade.  The protectors have had water cannons used against them, rubber bullets, attack dogs, and all kinds of other things that SHOULD NOT be used against peaceful protectors.  The major news networks aren’t covering this, though.  Kanye West being a douchebag is news, but not anything coming out of Standing Rock.  At the very least, talk about this with people you know, both in person and online.  Share information about the protectors and what kind of force is being used against them.  (HOWEVER, make certain that your information is accurate, please.  PLEASE.)  Here’s a Google search results link on how else you can help Standing Rock.

Second, for anyone that is not okay with Trump and his incoming administration, watch this.  I don’t much care for Keith Olbermann.  He’s a bit over-dramatic sometimes, but in this case, I’m okay with that.  Trump was elected because he inspired voters to get out and vote for him.  Hillary didn’t do that.  Olbermann might be a drama queen, but if that’s what it takes to get people motivated to oppose possible injustice, then I say go for it.  Trump is putting together a Cabinet that should scare a lot of people and instead of having a meeting with media network executives to discuss what kind of “access” those networks would have to his administration, he called them into a meeting to berate them for being negative towards him and running “unflattering pictures” of him.  It’s not the first time he’s thrown a fit about the press.  Journalists are legitimately afraid that “the free press” will not remain free under Trump.  There are a bunch of other things about the guy that should ring alarm bells, and I’m not going to get into them all here.  Bottom line: resist how you can.  Don’t hurt anyone, obviously, but don’t just be silent and pretend to be okay with all of this.  John Oliver lists organizations that might need help, TYT has a suggestion, and if you think it’s just whiny “special snowflake” American liberals that are worried, you’re wrong.  Resist.

Third, and last (for now), fight back against fake news.  This should not be difficult, people.  The next time you see a headline on social media that makes you mad, before you share it, CLICK ON THE HEADLINE AND READ THE ARTICLE.  After that, spend a little bit of time checking on whether or not the information in that article is accurate.  We, as a species, have unprecedented access to information that could be beneficial but unfortunately, facts don’t sell.  Fear sells.  Don’t be an idiot.  Please fact check before further proliferating bullshit and dumbing us down as a species.  Start with this blog post.  If I’ve linked to something that’s not correct, I want to know.  There is nothing wrong with being skeptical.  There IS something wrong if you’re presented with facts that contradict your currently held beliefs and you stick your fingers in your ears saying, “LALALALALA!!  CAN’T HEAR YOU!!!”  Not all sources of information online are created equal and anything that comes from an obviously biased source should be treated with caution.  Sources like Alex Jones, Breitbart, and Stormfront, however, shouldn’t even be considered sources.  Those are just a bunch of assholes with WiFi and an echo chamber.  So go ahead and call people out for posting something that isn’t accurate, but you damn well better have your ducks in a row first.

I think that’s all for now.
